One item you really need to get before joining Gujo Odori is Yukata (A causal & informal cotton Kimono)! If you do not want to wear Yukata for the whole day, or do not want to bring it, or you cannot wear by your own, we recommend you rent one at Ishiyama Gofukuten.

The owner Ms Kayoko Ishiyama is the 4th generation of a family business involving in Gujo Odori. She is also a member of Gujo Odori Preservation Society having many memories of Gujo Odori.

“Many visitors come to join Gujo Odori in Yukata nowadays, but in the past, we welcome everyone in any wear, so many come in T-shirt. I feel a bit sad. Because you need to wear Yukata to show some of the steps of Gujo Odori. As I want more people to wear Yukata to Gujo Odori Dance Festival, so I started this Yukata rental in 1998.” Ms Ishiyama said. Other than renting Yukata during the Gujo Odori Dance Festival, she also designs Yukata for many authorities. The quality of one of her design “Chiyo Yukata” is so high quality that it appeared in many medias for several times. This design is based on the story of a famous mother and wife, wife of Kazutoyo Yamanouchi who was born in Gujo. Ms Ishiyama renews new design every year. Many fans wait and look forward to her designs.

Yukatas that are only available at drapery shop including for women and for men, in total 150 ~ 160 pieces are there at the shop. Pair Yukata is also recommended! Ms Ishiyama chooses the most suitable Yukata for every customer, and she chooses Yukata-obis (Belt) to match their Yukatas. You can find a new you after putting on her Yukata! The one she chose for me is Sekishin form Chiyo Yukata series. As I seldom wear red, I feel so fresh and new! It only costs 3500JPY to rent a Yukata. Staff will help you putting on your Yukata for free. Thus, the shop will take care of your clothes and shoes except your valuable goods. You can go dancing without any unnecessary items. Of course, you can bring your own Yukata. It costs 1500JPY for dressing only. It takes around 10 minutes for one person. As Ms Ishiyama does all the things by her own, number of customers she can serve are limited. Please make a reservation before you come. After dressing up, Ms Ishiyama teaches us the history of Gujo Odori and the meaning of dance steps and lyrics. It is more fun when I know more about Gujo Odori! “Yukata is a Kimono type of sportwear during Gujo Odori Dance Festival. After intensive dancing, you will understand Yukata is able to absorb all sweat and moisture that keep you feel cool.” Ms Ishiyama said. She also wants everyone becomes a fan of Kimono after wearing one at the festival.

I finally get all the treasures, Tenugui, dancing Getas and Yukatas! I am looking forward to my summer holiday at Gujo!
