Three points to make Gujo Odori Dance Festival more fun for first time participants
First ~ Yukata ~
Anyone can participate in Gujo Odori. All can dance freely with any kinds of outfits, but we recommend wearing Yukata (Casual & informal cotton kimono). Because you can understand the beauty and meaning of art only by dancing in Yukata. If you don’t have one, there are kimono shops that rents Yukata locally, so please try to rent one there.
Second~ Geta ~
Geta (Wooden clogs) is not just about dressing up your feet, but its sound is also important. Geta is an indispensable item to match the rhythm and drive away evil spirits with the sound of wooden clogs. In particular, one of Gujo Odori’s songs, “Harukoma”, is using the sound of wooden clogs by dance movements. At a Geta shops, you can find your own Hanao (Clog thong) that fits your feet and have you own dancing Geta done here.
Third ~ Tenugui ~
Put a Tenugui (Japanese towel) on your neck if you are a man and put it on the collar and belt of Yukata for woman, you are already to be a great dancer too! Gujo Tourist Association creates a limited number of towels to match the annual Gujo Odori Dance Festival poster. Since the design is different every year, it is a popular item that many people collect them every year. They are sold at souvenir shops in the town, Gujo-Hachiman Hakurankan (Gujo Hachiman Museum), Former Hachiman Government Building Memorial Hall, etc. If you see them, please try them.
